“RheinOrt” Duisburg: City acquires 16,000 m2 site for new school and daycare center
DLE Land Development GmbH (DLE), based in Berlin, is developing the area known as “RheinOrt” on behalf of the owner in Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, situated on the right bank of the Rhine. As part of this project development, the city of Duisburg has acquired a portion of the total approximately 24 hectares of land. On the 16,000 square meter area, a school and a kindergarten are planned to be built. The corresponding section is expected to be handed over to the city of Duisburg after being renovated by mid-2025. Soil remediation work began at the beginning of 2024. The transaction was legally accompanied and supported by the law firm Poellath.
DLE Land Development GmbH plans to transform “RheinOrt” into a modern and urban work and residential quarter. The former industrial site in the Duisburg Hochfeld district is located in an attractive waterfront area and in close proximity to the “RheinPark,” which will host one of three “Future Gardens” during the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in 2027.
Nicolas Sauerwein, Project Manager at DLE Land Development GmbH, states, “Public and social infrastructure are significant urban elements of our neighborhood planning in ‘RheinOrt.’ Therefore, we are pleased that we have reached an agreement with the city of Duisburg regarding the provision of land for the construction of the school and kindergarten. We have now sold the designated areas to the city and will hand them over after soil remediation.”
Martin Linne, the city development officer of Duisburg, also expresses satisfaction with the progress in the development of the area: “The recent acquisition of land for the school and kindergarten reflects the cooperative and positive collaboration with DLE. At the same time, the public and social infrastructure in the new ‘RheinOrt’ neighborhood continues to take shape.”
The master plan created by DLE envisions an urban, mixed-use neighborhood for “RheinOrt.” A focus will be on the needs of social infrastructure. In collaboration with project manager Drees&Sommer, DLE follows the forward-looking concept of the 15-minute city. By spatially integrating work, living, public, and social infrastructure, a neighborhood of short distances will be created. The sustainability aspect of this planning strengthens, among other things, the function of public transportation. The International Garden Exhibition (IGA) taking place in 2027 in direct proximity to “RheinOrt” will also positively impact the attractiveness and quality of life in the future neighborhood.
